Hip injuries are not uncommon among elite athletes. The Red Sox's Mike Lowell and the Phillies' Chase Utley both are coming back from torn hip labrums, the same injury that has Alex Rodriguez mulling surgery.

But such injuries are not limited to baseball.

Tara Lipinski, the Olympic figure-skating champion, underwent surgery for the same hip injury Rodriguez is suffering - from the same doctor who examined A-Rod this week.

Lipinski was back on the ice in a week, and back in a major event in just a few months, but not without enduring some painful rehab.

"It was a blessing," Lipinski told The Post of the surgery, saying she has been pain-free since. "It changed everything for me."

Lipinski, who took home the gold in 1998, recalled yesterday that she had a badly torn hip labrum and ended up visiting Dr. Marc Philippon.

Lipinski said she had been bothered by the hip for four years, calling it "so much pain," but had continued to skate on tour.

"I couldn't be on that hip for very long," she said, "but I was doing triples no matter what."

Lipinski eventually underwent surgery - she believes it was in 2000 - and though the operation came in September, she was determined to return for Stars On Ice just a few months later in December.

Philippon had said she'd be back on the ice two weeks after the operation, but Lipinski felt good enough after just one week to try skating.

She said her recovery was difficult and grueling - Rodriguez probably shouldn't expect a fun few months if he opts for the surgery - but Lipinski did return for Stars On Ice.

She called the operation an "extreme success for me."

"On the ice, it even made my jumps better and bigger," she said. "I think for one because I wasn't in pain."

Lipinski gushed about Philippon, calling him "amazing."

"I was very nervous to go - that was my first surgery of any kind, and it was a really bad injury for me," she said. "I was on tour, I was already professional, but it was preventing me from skating to my full potential. I was in pain pretty much every day.

"My biggest fear was how long it was going to take me to get back on the ice."

As it turned out, not too long.
